The Implanon, a small contraceptive implant placed under the skin, provides long-lasting, highly effective protection against pregnancy for up to three years, requires no daily maintenance, and can be easily removed if you wish to conceive or discontinue its use. Women’s health expert Dr Linda Burnett is available to perform the procedure in our state of the art facility. A pre consult is required prior to insertion of this device.

What are the benefits of an Implanon?

Implanon offers many advantages for those seeking a convenient contraceptive method. It is long-lasting, providing protection for up to three years, and highly effective with a success rate of over 99%. Unlike daily pills or other methods, it requires no regular maintenance, making it an ideal option for busy lifestyles. The implant is discreet and virtually invisible once inserted, and it can be removed easily if you decide to conceive or discontinue use. Additionally, it is a safe choice for most individuals, including those who cannot use oestrogen-based contraception.

How does the implanon work?

The Implanon implant releases a steady, low dose of the hormone progestin into your bloodstream. This prevents pregnancy by stopping ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and thinning the uterine lining to reduce the chance of implantation. Its threefold mechanism ensures highly reliable protection against pregnancy.

Are there risks involved?

While Implanon is safe for most users, it may cause side effects or complications in some cases. Common issues include irregular bleeding, spotting, or changes in menstrual patterns. Hormonal side effects, such as mood swings, headaches, or acne, may also occur. Insertion risks are minimal but can include bruising, swelling, or infection at the insertion site. Rarely, the implant may migrate or be difficult to remove. It is important to discuss your medical history with a healthcare provider to determine if Implanon is the right option for you.

What does the implanon procedure involve?

The Implanon insertion process is quick and straightforward, performed under local anaesthesia in a clinic setting. The procedure typically takes only 15 minutes. Removal is equally simple and can be done by your GP at any time if you wish to stop using the implant. Watch a video of the insertion here.

What is the cost of an Implanon?

There will be an upfront fee of $145 at your implanon appointment. $49.55 will be rebated back to you. Implanon removal costs $145 and $58.85 will be rebated back to you.
