Mirena Insertion and Removal

Call to book an appointment (07) 5314 1321 or click the link below to book a pre consult online 24/7.

The Mirena / IUD is a long-term contraceptive device that also treats heavy periods and certain conditions like endometriosis. It works by releasing a hormone (levonorgestrel) to prevent pregnancy, reduce bleeding, and thin the uterine lining. Effective for 5-8 years, it’s a convenient, low-maintenance option. Our doctors at Currimundi Family Doctors offer the IUD insertion in a private treatment room. Women’s health expert Dr Linda Burnett is available to perform the procedure in our state of the art facility.

What are the benefits of an IUD?

The Mirena IUD is a long-lasting, highly effective contraceptive option that provides up to five years of protection against pregnancy. In addition to its convenience and over 99% effectiveness, it can help reduce heavy menstrual bleeding and alleviate period-related pain for many users. The Mirena is also a reversible method, allowing fertility to return quickly after removal, making it a versatile choice for individuals seeking both reliable contraception and potential non-contraceptive health benefits.

What does the IUD Procedure involve?

After a pre-consult, the doctor uses a speculum to hold the vaginal walls open, inserts the IUD through the cervix using a thin applicator, and places it in the uterus. After placing the IUD in the uterus using a thin applicator, the strings attached to the device are trimmed so they sit just inside the vaginal canal for future removal. See this video for a visual description.

Are there risks involved?

The risks are uncommon and it is considered a safe procedure, however the doctor will discuss the following possibilities with you; rare complications involve uterine perforation during insertion or the device being expelled from the uterus, especially within the first few months. There’s a small chance of infection shortly after placement due to bacteria entering the uterus. If pregnancy occurs while using an IUD, there is a higher risk of it being ectopic.

What is the cost of an IUD?

There will be an upfront fee of $300 at your mirena appointment. $174.25 will be rebated back to you.
